KEEPER’S UNIFORM

In 1883, the Lighthouse Board began to require keepers to wear a uniform, stating “it is believed that uniforming the personnel of the service, some 1,600 in number, will aid in maintaining its discipline, increase its efficiency, raise its tone, and add to the esprit de corps.” Keepers had to wear the uniform when on duty or when visiting the Board’s office. Although there were female keepers, a uniform for women was never designed.
